Accountability

Whenever a pastor or Christian leader falls morally and steps down from ministry, there are always opinions in the blogosphere. What happened? Why did it happened? At some point, someone says, “He/she should’ve had more accountability to prevent this.” While there is some truth to this, accountability does help. But accountability goes only so far.

That person has to want accountability.

It is easy to work around accountability, lie to those holding you accountable. At the end of the day, if someone is going to choose to sin over Jesus, they will choose sin. Accountability or not.

This struck me this morning as I was reading through Proverbs. In chapter 10, Solomon says Whoever heeds instruction is on the path of life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.

Accountability matters, but it matters only so far as the person being held accountable will allow it to go. Many times, we put accountability in our lives and simply work around it.
